NYTimes.com hand-codes its HTML
Khoi Vinh, the Design Director of NYTimes.com, explains that the Times's much-vaunted cross-platform consistency is down to hand-coding their HTML with a text-editor, not using GUI tools like Dreamweaver (via boingboing)

"Khoi Vinh, design director of NYTimes.com, is answering questions from readers April 21-25. To move directly to the most recent answer, click here.

Mr. Vinh was born in Saigon and immigrated with his family to the United States when he was 3 years old. He spent his childhood just outside of Washington, in suburban Maryland. He earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Otis School of Art in Los Angeles.

Though he studied to be a painter and illustrator, Mr. Vinh was drawn into graphic design and ultimately into interaction design as the World Wide Web gained popularity in the 1990s. He moved to New York in 1998, working during the first dot-com boom, and founded a successful interaction design studio in 2001. He joined The Times two years ago.

As design director, Mr. Vinh leads a group of 11 visual designers, information architects and design technologists in continually improving and extending the user experience at NYTimes.com. Mr. Vinh also writes and lectures extensively about design and technology, and serves on the national board of directors for AIGA, the professional association for design.

Other Times staff members have answered questions in this column, including Executive Editor Bill Keller, Managing Editor Jill Abramson, Managing Editor John Geddes, Assistant Managing Editor Glenn Kramon, Associate Managing Editor Charles Strum, Obituaries Editor Bill McDonald, Director of Copy Desks Merrill Perlman, Metropolitan Editor Joe Sexton, Living Editor Trish Hall, Investigations Editor Matthew Purdy, National Editor Suzanne Daley, Digital News Editor Jim Roberts and Culture Editor Sam Sifton. Their responses and those of other Times editors are on the Talk to the Newsroom page.

These discussions will continue in coming weeks with other Times editors and reporters"
